Books/shows for learning Japanese for someone who doesn’t like manga or anime

Only anime I watched and liked was Death Note. I liked the music and mind games, it was fun. Tried to get into attack on titan but hated it so much, the main kid literally only screamed the whole time, made me grind my teeth. The unrealistically big sword jet packs just look ridiculous.
One time for a class I read the English translation of barefoot gen and loved it.

Anyone have suggestions for reading or watching for someone about to finish their second semester of Japanese? Give me your favorites, I love a fun plot

  1. I would recommend the Netflix series First Love 初恋, I’m not a big jDrama fan, but this one is really really good, and since it’s on Netflix, it comes with Japanese subtitle, made it perfect for Japanese learners!

  2. Attack on Titan is extremely overrated and if you want a truly great anime then try Steins;Gate. There’s plenty of Japanese media that isn’t anime tho— music and live action Japanese movies.

  3. Read basic stories and articles about japanese culture, cities around the world, food, animals, almost any topic you’d like in tadoku.org, yomujp.com and matcha-jp.com

  4. Yeah, Shingeki no Kyojin isn’t very good, and it only gets worse as it goes on…

Akira is a movie about leader of a biker gang whose friend gets telekinetic abilities after a motorcycle accident. Try watching that. It’s an incredible experience.

Hotaru no Haka is another movie about children in WII. Be warned though, its graphic.

Gintama is an anime good for learning Japanese culture with comedy dispersed throughout the show. The voice acting is top notch.

Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai is maybe one of the most well put together anime I have ever seen. It’s a romantic comedy where two people that like each other try to make the other person say “I like you” first. It’s very clever and funny.

  5. I’m with you on getting annoyed at all the screaming some characters do. Hated Demon Slayer because of that.

    Two options:

    * Shinya shokudo (Midnight Diner): Not anime, slice of life stories about a group of night-owl weirdos that hang at the same late night diner.
    * Odd Taxi: Anime, but a really interesting story… don’t be put off by the ‘cute animals’ drawing, it’s a good bit grittier than it first appears. It’s almost Noir in some respects

  6. You can also check out the Satori app. It’s guided reading that helps you build your Anki deck.
