International Driving Permit in Japan

I am living in japan. I am Canadian with a Canadian driver’s license. I cannot go back to Canada right now. I’m looking at renting a car in the next few weeks here.

What are my options?

Iknow American forces have an option at local police stations, what about canadians?

Thank you.

  1. Change your license to a Japanese license as soon as possible is one choice. Canadians have it easy on that front.

  2. If you are a resident in Japan and if you’re here for longer than a month or two you would no longer be allowed to drive here with an intentional drivers license.

  3. You don’t need to take tests to get a Japanese driving license. Canada is one of the countries that have agreement with Japan. You just need a certified translation of your Canadian driving license. Google the process, it’s very straightforward.

  4. You can’t get a Canadian international drivers license in Japan. You can’t get a Japanese one either. It doesn’t matter anyway since a Japan-issued IDL isn’t valid inside Japan. Just get a real Japanese license.
