Gap year in University to study Japanese?

Hi, I’d really appreciate guidance on this matter. Especially from people who went to University and tbe job hunting process in Japan.

I’m a third year student in an English program at a good University in Japan, top 2 private University. I did high school at an international school in Japan so that’s why I’m doing my uni here.

But despite this, my Kanji skill is pathetically bad. My speaking is very good but reading is around N4 level. I was lazy and just never put in the work to learn Kanji. Also because I was actually gonna go abroad for Uni but changed plans due to Covid. Now I’m realizing how much I messed up.

So I was thinking of taking a gap year from Uni to enroll into a language school. I want to raise my Japanese level to at least N2 so that I can stand a chance during 就活。

I appreciate any advice!

  1. If you have the time and money is not an issue why don’t you get enrolled in part time Japanese language classes for a couple of days a week? Since you assume your spoken Japanese is already around N2 level, and you’re young, it won’t be hard for you to skyrocket your reading & Kanji skills in a year or two. I don’t think it will add too much workload on top of your current curriculum because you already speak well.
I was in a similar situation and I’ve passed N2 in a year with self study. The key is to practice plenty of reading on top of part time language school: Essays, articles, ADs on train, お知らせ, instructions on the bathroom.. I pushed myself to read any kind of material to achieve my goals. You have to familiarize yourself with Kanji on a daily basis. Hope this helps!
