Should I accept offer for Paypay?

I am in a professional dilemma and after going through various reviews and whatnots, I come here for some advice.

I was contacted by some recruiters of “Tech japan” who submitted my profile to paypay.
From what I was told, Paypay hires via Tech Japan.
I cleared all their rounds and got a decent offer. But, there is a catch.
I was going through their ppt that they shared and I see “you will be joining as an Independent contractor”.

Looks like this is not a permanent job and I’m not sure how these “contract based” things work out and specially in Japan.
They do say that paypay will cover the financial costs of flying me to japan and all those things and I will be directly under paypay’s payroll.

I am yet to have a final round with hiring manager. So I am thinking of clarifying these things.

I am in dilemma whether to accept or not. The pay is good, the technology stack is good (I’m a software engineer), benefits are decent. I read about overtime and I’m fine with it. I do overtime willingly in my current company too.
I am hating the current company’s culture now, that’s the reason I really want to switch.

What would be the best thing, if anyone has 2 cents to add or share their experience/thoughts, it would be great.

Thanks to everyone in advance.

  1. By “independent contractor,” are they perhaps mistranslating or mis-explaining 契約社員? Because, if that’s the case, you’re a PayPay employee and not an independent contractor — but also just not a permanent employee.

I don’t know how you could get a work visa as an independent contractor. This is the only explanation that makes sense.

You need to ask if this is what they’re referring to.

  2. They may mean Individual Contributor (IC). Typically in the software world, you’ve got the Contributor track and Management track. Developers are ICs, managers are not.

  3. From what I’ve heard it’s a great company, and with a massively wealthy parent company they’re expanding pretty fast. You may try to negotiate to get a “seishain” or permanent contract.

  4. OOT, how many yoe do you have before deciding to move to japan?

And where can I contact those kind of recruiter?

  5. Did you get asked any Data Structures and Algorithm questions? And If so, where they easy/medium leetcode questions?

  6. Are you working remotely from abroad? If so, that’s normal. They have you work as a contractor and then switch you to full-time when you move to Japan.

If you’re working in Japan and you want to be full-time, I would just ask them to make you full-time.

They hire tons of full-time (正社員) software engineers and if you passed all their interviews you have leverage.
