how to correctly terminate spousal status at departure

Hello all,

Was sent here from movingtojapan as I’m technically inquiring from a spousal visa in Japan POV

Earlier this year, while the borders were still closed, we came on a spousal visa to visit family and toy with the idea of staying here. After looking for work opportunities, my employer overseas gave me a counteroffer I couldn’t deny and before a month had even passed, we flew back home. At this time, I got a re-entry permit thinking it’d be a good idea if we wanted to visit while the borders were still closed.

Fast forward to now, we came back to spend the holidays with the family and they stamped me on the re-entry permit.

Although we have not lived/will not be living here now, we do still intend to re-assess in 2~ years. In order to terminate this status on good terms (my card will expire in February), I understand I should decline a re-entry permit on departure and surrender my residence card. However, folks over at the other subreddit are suggesting I check in at the ward city hall to pay pension/insurance. I’ve never checked in with them in the past, nor have I declared an address. Do I actually owe royalties even though I’ve not actually resided nor worked here during most of the year? If yes, what should I ask for / do before departure?

Thank you in advance for your help

  1. Please tell me I’m not the only one who interpreted this subject line as OP wanting to be granted a divorce on their way out of the country
