I plan to go to Japan next year.
Goal: To have conversations with locals. Maybe be able to read basic words?
Is 1 hour a day study realistic?
(I will be able to listen to 8hrs of audio a day)
Does Immersion have to be with video to begin to understand words through visual context?
What method and what should the 1 hour of focused study consist of?

I think it’s a realistic goal by the end of your 1 year in Japan. Speaking from personal experience, but good luck
Wouldn’t it be more effective to make good use of the 8 hours rather than the 1 hour? Couldn’t you go through Pimsleur and then go at the japanesepod podcasts?
Then in your 1 hour you would have plenty of time to learn Hiragana/Katakana/Basic Kanji.
You can learn a bunch of phrases etc but if you’re a tourist you probably won’t be able to catch much of what comes back to you. It takes many people around six months in the country to start getting comfortable. If you’re just travelling get a phrasebook and don’t worry too much. Hiragana, katakana and some basic kanji will help you with daily things like restaurant menus and signs etc but don’t expect much from yourself just enjoy. A year is nothing in language learning.
