Dummy question: Name too long to apply for Mistui Sumitomo card

Any Mistui Sumitomo credit card holders out there?

My bank account name or 名義 as they say (Last, First, Middle) was too long to enter on the online application. I tried writing my full name on the materials they sent by mail but my application was still rejected due to the discrepancy with the online form.

I have found zero customer service resources on their website to address this. No phone number I tried has worked either. Just constantly getting redirected to their frequently asked questions page which doesn’t address my issue.

Has anyone else had this problem or have any advice for getting around this? It seems that changing my back account name might be my only option but that doesn’t sound worth it tbh…

Thanks for your help!

  1. It’s a common problem, unfortunately, with financial companies having systems that can’t handle non-Japanese names. It’s basically a form of systemic discrimination. I couldn’t register my bank account with PayPay because my account name is in full-width romaji but the PayPay system requires katakana for bank account names, which makes it impossible for me to register my bank account with them. If you can’t contact them online or by phone try going to one of their bank branches and explaining to them what the problem is.

  2. I have the same card. It a pretty common issue. You will need to go to a branch and they will sort it out for you.

  3. there is always some sort of work around. I know from experience, having a first, middle and two last names is a fucking curse in Japan.
