Is there really no inexpensive way to send a small package to the U.S.?

We bought a very small, light item to send to the States. It’s maybe 25 grams. According to my wife, they want 3000¥. I’m talking Japan Post/EMS. She says she looked at other ways and they don’t seem better. Does this sound right? You can do Europe for about 1000¥.

  1. JP Post doesn’t accept airmail to US right now, only the expensive EMS. You can do airmail (kokusai ePacket) to the Europe.

  2. Yamato should be cheaper, I hate using them for sending any sort of care packageish stuff though because they request you leave everything open and unwrapped so they can check contents at acceptance

  3. Size is also a factor.
I sent some Japanese trinkets back to the US one time, was 7000 yen. More than the cost of the trinkets.

  4. I send stuff sometimes. Mostly snacks. My wife sent one out to my parents just last week that was in a 60 sized box and contained only light weight snacks totalling 2kg. Cost 6500¥

  5. Not only is it expensive, it’s slow as hell. I just paid 5000 yen to send a 2kg box of snacks and stuff to my family in the US. I sent it in mid October and it still hasn’t arrived.

Also, when I went to the post office, apparently they don’t even create shipping labels or anything anymore. You have to create your own shipping label via their shitty website. But if you’re unfamiliar with shopping options it can be quite confusing. So you have to basically do their job for them and then pay premium pay for super slow mail.
Just like most things in Japan it’s a huge pain in the a$$

  6. I just sent a package and pretty much only EMS is available right now. You could hold on to it and just wait and see if stuff improves in the new year.

  7. I just sent 2 face towels and a Christmas card that weighed 85grams and it cists ¥3900. I could only send via EMS.
