Is watching TV in japanese to assist learning a good idea?

https://youtu.be/J_EQDtpYSNM I saw this video and it seemed promising. I’ve watched a bit of anime in japanese, with japanese subtitles as well, and I think it’s helping? But wanted to check in.

If it works, I’ll say I’m finding it a really enjoyable way to help me learn Japanese.

  1. Some people learn languages entirely through TV. My spouse, who is fluent in English, learned via that method.

  2. “Will immersion help me?”

How did you learn English mate? Only through a textbook? Or did you also watch movies, talk to people and watch YouTube?

  3. What’s really helped me is listening to Japanese podcasts that have a transcript available. I listen first and see how much I catch. Also using VLC player I can slow down the podcast (I aim for 5% slower). Then I review the transcript and see what I missed.

  4. Input is obviously key to learning a language. But in order for the input to be helpful it must be *comprehensible*. A base line level of understanding must exist before you can really gain what you need from that kind of input. Depending on your level, it might be better to start with children’s shows. Obviously something like *Anpanman* isn’t particularly interesting, but don’t discount the simple pleasure of being able to understand something.

  5. yeah if it’s input at your level

if it’s way above your level probably not, if it’s way below it also may not be that helpful either except as re-enforcement or review etc
