I’d love some advice on the best options for traveling over the New Year’s holiday. I am aware that it will be a very busy time, so I would love to figure out train tickets, etc. beforehand. I’ll be traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto on Saturday, December 31st – then Kyoto to Matsumoto on Tuesday, January 3rd – then Matsumoto to Tokyo on Wednesday, January 4th. I’ve looked at the JR Pass and it doesn’t look the most affordable option, but being able to reserve seats ahead of time might be worth it. However, I am unsure what tickets to buy and how to buy them. Any advice is appreciated!

Since you mentioned JR Pass, I assume you’re not in Japan at the moment?
You can buy reserved seat tickets without the JR Pass. You go to the eki-net website (JR booking site) to purchase the tickets and book the seats. Or you can go to a ticket counter (Green counter) at a bigger JR station, and they will help you.
If you buy online, remember that for Shinkansen you need to buy both base fare and limited express fare, which you do at the same time, just make sure the correct boxes are checked when checking out (you an buy the base fare later if you forget).
