Confused about transport timetables

Hello! Me and my friend are visiting Japan in June and are in the process of planning out the trip.

We are landing on Narita airport on a sunday around 02:00 AM. The confusion here is how can we find the best transport to our target location at this time of the night?

We plan on ordering a JR pass ahead of time and as soon as we land try to get to fukuoma. And from there work our way back to Tokyo during a 14 day span.

Our hope is that we can get on a JR train to Fukuoma asap as it takes about 5hrs and we will then have they whole day ahead of us to explore! Anyone know the best way from here? Thanks in advance.

  1. You have very limited option with a 2AM arrival. And I assume you mean Fukuoka? Have you check hyperdia?

  2. Unfortunately, most Trains in Japan don’t run in the middle of the night. The first N’EX leaves Narita at 07:37, and the last N’EX leaves Narita at 21:44. That means the middle of the night, you’re going to be relatively limited in ways to get to the city.

The best route I could figure out with a short amount of research is you take the 05:20 Keisei Line (headed toward Haneda) to Keisei Funabashi station, transfer to the Sobu line JR train at Funabashi Station, get off at Shinagawa, where you can pick up the Shinkansen.

This would get you to Hakata station sometime in the early afternoon.

I will say it’s probably more convenient all around just to pick up a connecting flight at Narita – You can get a one-way flight for 6000-7000Y or so on Peach or Jetstar, though you will have to pay for luggage. But since those flights start at 6AM, you can get yourself to Fukuoka much earlier in the day (8-9AM).

For actual tooling, Hyperdia and Google Maps are your best bet – just make sure you set your options to prefer what you want (fastest time, least walking, fewest transfers, etc.)

  3. Narita Airport closes overnight, are you certain you’re landing there and not Haneda? There shouldn’t be any flights arriving at 2am.
