Is it ok to charge 300% the day rate for a lost parking ticket?

This is the type of ridiculous stuff Japanese companies get away with I just don’t see in other developed countries…I get it you’re not supposed to lose the paper, *sugoi personal responsibility should be followed at all times*, but it happens. Yes I did it, I’m human and I misplaced my parking.

Today I went to leave the garage today and thought, oh no problem, I’ll just hit the lost ticket button, so it asks for 5000 so I can leave the carpark, the day rate is 1600. I actually only used the carpark for 2 hours to make matters worse. I would’ve paid a full day rate…should I have to pay for 3 full days? There really is no warning about the 5000 fee, it just is. I mean why not just charge 10000? Might as steal as much as you can while holding people to ransom.

It’s extreme gouging. Why would it not just be the day rate?

Stuff like this is why I think people aren’t having kids, trying new things and feel like everything is too hard. Because it just is stupid. I have an adventurous spirit so something like this wouldn’t put me down, but it does make eating a combini lunch in my dark apartment, hiding out and playing some PS4 all the more tempting.

I can afford it, but what happens if a family who doesn’t have spare cash cruising around runs into something like this? It’s just madness…

  1. well in germany there are also systems like this.
day parking cost around 6-8€ but a lost one costs 50.
(always depends on the location, some people in the city dont have designed parkng places and when they go for a week or more on holiday its actially more cheap just losing your ticket, instead of taking the risk of your parking place suddenly becoming a dont park here (and they take your car) because of some random fastival)

but ofc for the normal person who really lost their ticket, its not really ok.

  2. In the US they’d just tow and impound your car for hundreds of dollars to start and increasing by like $50 USD every day. 🤷‍♂️ They get away with far worse.

But I agree, that is dumb. Sounds like a crappy lot. Most lots I see here charge only a daily rate for a lost ticket.

Use a different lot next time if possible.

  3. Agreed. I have ADHD and lose shit ALL THE TIME. Japan does not like this and is clearly unhappy about my tendencies.

  4. Not sure why you think 3 days is so bad – you can park in most places for several days no issue. It’s done that way specifically to avoid abuse.

    >There really is no warning about the 5000 fee, it just is.

Pretty sure it’s written down on the T&C board they have at the parking place. You really should check that.

  5. Yes, 5,000 is just too much, but what can we do? If you complain to the parking management they will just shrug, moshiwakegozaimasen, and ask you to pay.

If this happened to me, I would retrace my steps to see if I can find the lost ticket. Then, if I couldn’t still find it, I would call the management company and not complain, but cry, beg, tell them I have no job, no money and 4 kids, etc.

And now the alternative way: obtain a new ticket. By calling a friend with a car, and asking him to approach the gate, take a ticket, and then reverse the hell off and leave, giving you the ticket beforehand. Do you have any friend with huge balls and nothing to lose that will help you participate in something like that? Me neither.

From now on, always put the parking ticket in your wallet.

  6. Not that I would recommend this course of action, but it is possible to wait for a car to leave and sneak out right behind them. Presumably they could come after you by researching your license plate, but even then it would probably be only for ¥5000

Oh, and I think you’re going way overboard with the extrapolation lol

  7. If you lose your ticket, they do not know if you were there for 3 hours or 3 weeks. Had there been a sign that says that if you lose the ticket, you pay 300%, you would have still parked there thinking that you wouldn’t lose the ticket.

  8. You jump from losing a frickin parking ticket to reasons why people aren’t having kids…

Little bit dramatic don’t you think?

I do agree with you though. It is kinda shitty for them to charge that much though.

  9. Go to the parking lot entrance and press the button for a new ticket and leave with that one.

  10. Did you asked for an employee on the premises to check you time get in?! Most of those places have at least one person on site… I do prefer the parking spots that you just input the number and it give you the time and price… You don’t need to carry the ticket… But when is full day or more it’s not cheap….

  11. Companies here charge as high as they possibly can. You can fight it with a lawyer, but probably not worth the cost which is what they are counting on.
