Refund for apartment with no Japanese bank account

I’m currently having some trouble getting a refund from the company I’m renting an apartment from.

I’m on Working Holiday Visa and paid up front because they required that I be employed to do monthly payments.

I decided to head home early, and they have given me a breakdown on the refund, but they say they cannot refund to anything other than a Japanese bank account, which I do not have and cant get.

I offered to accept the refund through wise, paypal, even cash although I would incur significant exchange fees.

Is there any other option I can suggest to them for this, or something on my end I can do that I haven’t thought of?

  1. You don’t have friend here that let you borrow their bank account? If it’s only for bank transfer they won’t lose anything.

  2. The only other option would be to request the refund in cash, but that still doesn’t help you since you left Japan before taking care of the various affairs you should have taken care of before leaving. Either find a friend to receive it for you, or write it off as a lesson in planning better.

  3. Have a trusted friend accept the refund for you. Or see if you offer to pay the transaction fee if they will wire it directly to a foreign account. The other methods you mentioned are definitely not possible (they won’t use online methods like PayPay and chances are they don’t know what wise is) and for accountability reasons they aren’t going to hand you cash as then the paper trail is more difficult than if it’s clearly in their bank records.
