What’s your experience sending stuff home, in the pandemic? I have heard that Japan Post won’t send packages to Canada. I’m thinking I should start sending stuff soon so it’s there when I arrive in August.
Look into using Yamato Transport, they can send stuff overseas for a reasonable price. But you need to fill out a bunch of customs paperwork and itemize everything you’re sending over. (Don’t try to fudge on the itemization, cuz I was helping another ALT and they literally opened the box in front of us to verify the paperwork matched the package).
I have decided to just buy 2 extra suitcases and pay for extra luggage for my flight instead of sending boxes home. If you’re flying Air Canada, it’s around $250 for an extra baggage (and no additional fee if its overweight). It’ll be a bit of a hassle getting it all to the airport, but Yamato has an airport delivery service so you can send it ahead of you a few days prior to departure.
Canadian here. Been sending my stuff home since January through DHL because Japan Post has not been opened for Canada since the pandemic started.
*DHL will hurt your wallet*
I spent about $500 mailing my stuff home to Canada. It was a hassle, stressful and – as I found out – at the time (and maybe still now) Japan Post won’t insure packages to Canada because Canada Post breaks too many parcels.
If I were to do it over again, I’d just pay the extra baggage fee at the airport and bring a third/fourth suitcase back.
