Embedded systems engineer with limited japanese.

Hello everyone,

I am currently looking for offers to work in japan as an embedded systems engineer (idealy in the automotive but i’ll take what i can get)

I have a few issues with that, i’d consider my japanese to sit somewhere around n3 level (i have never taken actual jlpt but i am considering it for next december)

I was looking for offers that didn’t require fluent/billingual japanese but theses seem quite rare or i don’t have enough experience (2 years and 3 months).

So i have a few questions,

Are there ways to do engineering while still learning the language ? One of the reason i want to move is to be able to learn japanese more and better (and for the experience ofc)

Where do you look for offers like theses ? I’ve tried glassdoor, LinkedIn, etc…

Thank you for your insight 🙂

  1. Have you tried looking for expat opportunities at companies in your country with offices in Japan? I think as an engineer that would be the easiest way and they often dont require that much japanese knowledge, if any.

  2. I’m in a similar situation to you (though I’ve got N2). I’ve always heard that you don’t need any/much Japanese to work in IT, but embedded seems to be the exception.

I’ve been using Recruit, but it doesn’t really make any concessions for non-native speakers, and most of the jobs require pretty good Japanese…

Have you checked Daijob? The jobs on there tend to be a bit more foreigner-friendly. There’s also a bunch of English speaking recruiters on there who might be able to help.

Also, I noticed that getting N2 seemed to make a huge difference. As soon as I updated my profile to say I had it, I was suddenly getting a lot more interviews. So studying hard and getting it would probably help quite a bit if you can wait.
