Grounding Wire for Nespresso

Hey y’all,

I just got a Nespresso from Costco, and realized I have a problem. The Nespresso comes with a green grounding wire, but our kitchen only has one outlet with screws to ground with, and it doesn’t appear to be working. All the other outlets appear rather old and have nowhere to attach. Am I going to burn down my house if I don’t ground it? Is there some sort of surge protector I should buy to use with it?

Thanks!

  1. Check if the machine is double-insulated or not. Eg. check continuity between line->chassis and neutral->chassis. If there’s no continuity just ignore the ground.

In any case, you will not burn the house down. If there’s a fault in the machine you might get shocked when touching any metal part of the chassis.

On another note, what do you mean by the screw-in ground “it’s not working”?

  2. The ~~legal~~ requirement would be yes, you need to connect the ground wire.

The practical requirement is that many a good folk don’t connect the wire for such devices and lived long fruitful lives. If it is like mine, the Nespresso is plastic bodied and so the ground wire doesn’t really serve much of a safety purpose.

Your house certainly won’t burn down (at least not from a disconnected ground wire), but there is a non-zero chance it could protect you from a potential shock should an exposed wiring fault energize your Nespresso chassis. The more likely scenario would be if you dropped it in the sink while plugged in.

Mine isn’t connected but I also don’t refrigerate my mayonnaise either.
