When should we start using the plain form with new friends?

I’m new to Japanese and I’ve already understood the importance of politeness and using honorifics with everybody you meet for the first time, even with people around your age. But I’m still having a hard time figuring out the right time to start using the plain form with new friends.

How should we even go about this? Do we ask the other person for permission or do we just stop using honorifics altogether one day? With other languages where politeness is also important like French or Italian and Spanish, you can just ask the other person and it’s as simple as that and it’s sometimes not even necessary when we’re about the same age. Can I do the same with Japanese and ask for permission just like that? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank you all in advance!

  1. You can just wait until they start using them with you, or just ask when you feel like you’re at that point.
