Grilled Fish Yakitori over Campfire

Will be visiting Japan soon and stumbled upon this restaurant far out from Nagoya that sells essentially grilled fish around campfires in their restaurant (Yanagiya; https://goo.gl/maps/zFg1jtai8qvcueox7). I admit – I’ve only seen this style in animes and didn’t realize it was actually a thing here.

It is quite a far trip and my itinerary is the more classic Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka. Does anyone know any restaurants in those areas that serve something similar – fish around a campfire?

Thanks

  1. Coincidental timing, as I’ve recently asked my wife if we can go to a similar place after I showed her Yanagiya’s photos. Apparently, Yanagiya is one of the hardest restaurants in Japan to get a spot for (like you need to know someone to get in). That said, quite a few onsen in the northern parts of Japan, particularly around the Nyuuto area, do this. We’re planning a trip up there in late winter for exactly that purpose.

As for places around Tokyo/Osaka, I’m sure there must be. You’ll want to google “irori” restaurants or “irori-ya” (the first is the style of cooking, and the second just adds “shop”). Good luck and I hope you have a nice trip.
