Designated Activity status: prepare to depart Japan?

I graduated from language school and want to continue looking for a job. However, my language school doesn’t provide the documents that are required for changing to a designated activity (就職活動) status of residence. I’ve read about some people changing to a “making preparations to depart japan” designated activity status. Has anyone had experience doing that recently?

On the Application for Change of Status of Residence form, where it asks for “Reason for Change Status of Residence” and later where it asks for “Type of activity” should I just write “To prepare to depart from Japan”?

How likely is it that I’ll be approved? Should I put 3 or 6 months on the application for the desired period of stay?

Thanks for your help. Doing stuff at the immigration center always flusters me.
