Memorizing writing while using monolingual definitions for prompts

For anyone who studies by being prompted by a definition and writing the word in Japanese, while using a monolingual dictionary, how do you avoid having the target Kanji in the prompted definition?

Part of writing the word is to help me learn the Kanji and their parts, so I feel that seeing the Kanji in the definition would defeat that aspect of writing vocabulary. Any words of wisdom would help, as I’d like to transition to monolingual, but I feel that this is a blocker for me.
