天国に近そうな気がしてた
I’m having some trouble trying to break up this sentence. I know that “天国に” means something similar to “to heaven”, and “気がしてた” is related to feeling (?), but the “近そうな” part is really tripping me up.
I thought at first 近そうな was a na-adjective, but then I heard some sources saying that 近 is an i-adjective, and also that you would only include the な if the adjective was before the noun.
I’m really confused, how do you break down 近そうな???

近い + そう + な
Remove い from 近い to connect そう
そう（な） is just a conjugation for adjectives, it means “seemingly” or “would be”

very commonly used in おいしそう = “it looks delicious” as said of food arriving at the table
X気がする = feels like X / feel as if X
so altogether “had been having a feeling as if close to heaven”, or probably more naturally but less directly “had felt close to heaven”
