Is it possible for me to apply for an international driver’s permit while living here, or does it have to be issued by my home country (UK)? I want to rent a car but didn’t sort out my driving licence before I came.
Perhaps at the Embassy? If anyone has experience with this and also knows how much it costs I’d be very grateful! Can’t seem to find the actual answer to my questions anywhere else

Not if you want it for the purpose of driving in Japan.
You apply for an international drivers permit here in Japan for the purpose of driving outside of Japan. You have to show your Japanese drivers license in order to get it.
You can transfer your UK license to a Japanese one at a driving center (where you’ll need an application fee and will have to take a written test and a driving test). Two minutes of searching on Google shows [you’ll have to apply in the UK for an international driving license](https://www.postoffice.co.uk/identity/international-driving-permit). Japan’s international permits are only for people who hold Japanese driving licenses.
