So I rent an old house and the outlet that my aircon is plugged into stopped working. There’s a plug about a meter away on the floor that’s newer and still works, and I can theoretically plug it in there, but the cord, of course, isn’t long enough. Is there a specific extension cord I can use that’s safe? I know the big ticket appliances aren’t recommend to use with extension cords because fire but surely there’s something.

Get something heavy duty and it should be okay.
But, before that, if the ‘outlet that stopped working’ is up there by the a/c unit, it is likely a dedicated outlet, _with its own breaker.,_ nothing else will be on that circuit. Your first step should be checking the breaker panel to see if any of them have popped to the ‘off’ position.
