Lost Residents Card – Leaving in the Morning

Looking for some advice. I am headed to the States for a few months in the morning, and between moving out of my apartment, and getting ready for the trip, today I lost my Residents Card.

How screwed am I? Would leaving the country without having it to show at immigration (outbound) threaten my immigration status once I try to come back? Going towards permanent residency, would this eliminate the years I’ve accumulated?

If I have to I can stay behind if I need to, and apply for a new one. But sending my wife alone with a toddler, and missing Christmas, makes me what to make sure that is absolutely necessary.

Thanks for any thoughts you might have.

  1. I’ve been there. Go to the koban and submit a 紛失届 funshitsu todoke. Arrive REALLY early to the airport and explain at customs.

(This is what I did in 2014 so YMMV and you should Google / check the airport website for more recent info.)

    Good luck!

  2. If you don’t have the koban proof that you lost your ziaryu card, you won’t be allowed back in the country on visa. They will process you on tourist visa if available.
