Filling taxes for part-time job (after not doing it for years)

I’ve had a side gig for a while that my work approved of, and which falls under my type of work visa. It’s not paid on a consistent basis, and the amount depends on how frequently/how long I do it (max 4 times a month, often less).

I initially didn’t do it out of ignorance (there is a tax deduction which comes out automatically…maybe I thought that exempted me) and the yearly amount wasn’t that much. It has increased somewhat, and is definitely over the 200k a year threshold on average which I’ve seen posted here (granted for some months – like this one- the amount is zero).

I’m wondering if it’s best to continue to ignore it, or to start filing it from now on? I am planning on applying for permanent residency next year, and am wondering if this could affect it/which approach I should take. I did ask my part-time employer about it, and they had mentioned that it was a bit of a grey zone.

Thanks.
