(For Brits) How do I tell HMRC about my marriage?

Hello Brits of japanlife!

I got married recently and I recall a long time ago hearing that HMRC needs to be notified that my marital status has changed. Not sure if this applies when I’m out of the country, but I’d like to do it anyway just in case.

I couldn’t find any way to do this on the website, but it’s possible I’m just not seeing where it needs to be filled in? If anyone has any handy links, much appreciated.

Thanks!

  1. There is no way you can register a foreign marriage in the uk anymore. There used to be a service a few years ago with the General register office to allow you to deposit a copy of your overseas marriage certificate but the service stopped due to money saving!

“A marriage abroad will be legally recognised in the UK providing it was contracted according to the law of the country in which it took place. There is no requirement, or facility, to register the marriage in England afterwards. We therefore suggest you consider obtaining extra marriage certificates, and translations if necessary, whilst abroad.”
