Hi! My husband and I recently moved to Japan and we were wondering where to buy chickens (as pets to live in our backyard)? I tried googling and found a few things but nothing very helpful. We live in Gifu.

when I was looking to adopt my dog, I saw that people are also giving away other animals like chickens, goats, etc.
You can buy fertilized eggs (有精卵) by mail order and incubate some live chickens yourself 🙂
You can buy a cheap incubator (孵卵機) to keep the eggs warm until hatching.
Lots of larger pet shops will actually sell chickens. Especially try hardware stores that have a pet department like HOMES or CAINZ. It’s also where you’ll find chicken feed/etc.. (this one looks promising – Super Viva Home Gifu Yanaizu shop スーパービバホーム 岐阜柳津店)
Be aware chickens need a lot of maintanance and such. They’re also expensive (the incubator idea below – it would have been cheaper to buy an incubator and the eggs than pay for 9 chickens in the store).
We got started when my daughter fell in love with a bunch of silver brahma chickens and I didn’t feel like paying 9,000 each for them. Foolishly I decided on quail. Also foolishly I wound up with chickens.
Also be aware roosters will make you incredibly unpopular in the neighborhood and if the chickens do what chickens do if they’re not kept in a run you’ll be even more unpopular with your neighbors (why I had to rehome my chickens).
You should probably ask the folks over at [Japan Simple Life](https://www.japansimplelife.com/) a few of them keep chickens and several are even full time chicken farmers.
A suprisingly large number of places. Nagoya Cochin best chicken! You can probably find them at some of the larger home centers around Tokai. The eggs are great!
The DCM Kahma in Tajimi-shi, occasionally carries Nagoya Cochin chicks, up to 3 months old.
Same with Aeon pets near Nagoya Dome.
World Ranch pet Shop.
愛知県畜産総合センター, though you may need to be a farmer for this.
I had a larger list, but not sure what happened to it.
A lot of places suggest the pet stores only sell chicks from April- June, but you can always ask, and they might help you out. Most home centers can get you chicks any time of year if you don’t want to search around too hard, just be persistent. JA, in theory, is willing to sell you chicks, but they usually prefer to fight with you first before doing anything useful. YMMV.

This seems like a post about shopping, maybe your question is solved by [the wiki page](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/wiki/shopping)?
