How much is a 145,000 yen net income in Kyoto or Nagoya?

Just as the title says. If I were offered the chance of living in Japan with that much money, how hard/easy will life be for me?

(Note: I’m relatively frugal, I don’t like partying or drinking, nor do I have a fancy for expensive clothes or stuff, but I do want to get to know the country as much as possible).

EDIT: Health insurance is completely covered, and, quite possibly, accommodation.

  1. Is that net income after all your taxes, bills and day to day living? What is your expected gross and what deductions have you made to get the net?

  2. Not enough. You’ll spend at least half of this on rent and then you need to eat, pay taxes and health insurance, transportation, etc. It would be miserable.

  3. If you have the choice go for Kyoto, so much more to do and see. Close to Osaka, Nara and Lake Biwa.
Rent, health insurance and travel will be your biggest expenses. Get yourself a bicycle.
Food is cheap. You can pick up a part time job if you need extra cash, Teaching English, or conbini work.

  4. Isn’t that a net of part time employee? You will still have to take consideration your bills like phone, not sure about your accommodation if gas, electric and water is included. You will have to cook a lot to save money.

  5. When I first came to Japan on an internship I was getting jpy200,000 monthly as a stipend. My employer paid for my accommodations, mobile phone, and train pass.

I was able to save a fair amount of money as I didn’t go out much and cooked most of my meals.

Things are more expensive now, and you’ll probably have expenses I didn’t have. So you’ll probably not end up saving any money at all. But if you’re not paying rent then that amount should be livable.

  6. Doable as a student. I went on a scholarship of $120000/mo and had to cover my own rent and insurance and I still was able to get by.

  7. When I first came to Japan around 10 years ago, my income after tax, insurance, and accommodation was around 120,000 yen. I was living in Tokyo, around Ueno, and I still had a blast.

I lived with half a dozen guys in a company house, we partied almost every other weeks, we pooled our money to buy a second hand PS3, games, manga…, life was great. And I went on short trips almost every weekends, with long trips once in a while.

After all that, I still saved around 50,000~70,000 yen per month.
