I can totally understand Japan opting for nuclear energy, as it has no natural resources for energy. But extending existing reactors well beyond their intended service life is exactly how Fukushima happened. GE had been warning Japan for years that Fukushima was beyond its intended service life.
It sounds like Japan learned nothing from Fukushima.
