What non Japanese dishes you make using Japanese ingredients?

Eating western/middle eastern food here comes with a higher cost and its nice to switch things up. So, anyone have some favorite recipes/ food hacks using common Japanese grocery store ingredients to get some other flavors/comfort foods?

  1. Ok it’s more for summer but I make a pico de gallo type dish but substitute coriander for shiso and lime juice for either yuzu or sudachi. Super interesting taste. Can play around with it, coriander and yuzu works too.

  2. Hawaiian-Asian Fusion is great:
    1) Mochiko chicken
    2) Curry Loco Moco
    3) Hawaiian Mac salad
    4) Misoyaki butterfish (gindara)

    Other recipes.
If you don’t have a smoker, you can make oven baby back/spare ribs. Though you won’t find a whole rack, most Japanese groceries will sell cut ribs. Season with a dry rub – simple can be brown sugar, chili powder, salt, pepper, garlic powder, etc. Bake in 135C oven wrapped in foil packet. Drain fat (but save for beans) and then bake opened packet on high 230C. Glaze every 5 minutes with BBQ sauce. Easy sauce can be made with grape jelly or any kind of jam (we’ve even used yuzu jam in a pinch), ketchup, mustard, onion powder, black pepper and chili powder. Glaze and bake on high for 4 glazings. Tweak recipe as you will given cut ribs vs a rack.

If you have a smoker, I’d give you a different recipe.

Same run and glazing can be used for chicken.

Korean and Chinese food is easily made as well, with Japanese ingredients, but it’s not Western food.
