Clarification – need help.

Hello. I am gathering my requirements to submit for applying change from working to spouse visa, and I would like to confirm something about tax certificates. On the immigration website:

“Documents proving the cost of one’s stay in Japan

(1) Tax certificate (or tax exemption certificate) for individual inhabitant taxes and a tax payment certificate for the most recent year (showing gross income and taxes paid for one year) for the person providing the applicant’s living expenses – 1 copy of each”

If I’m not mistaken, I should get both the Nozei shomeisho and Kazei shomeisho, right? Should I get both certificates of my husband and of myself? Or just my husband’s will be enough? We’re both employed but my husband is my guarantor.

Also: “Issued by the ward office, city hall, or town office of the municipality of residence as of January 1.” — does this mean January 1, 2022? Or January 1, 2023… if I am submitting my requirements on January or February 2023?

Thank you for answering and happy holidays!

  1. In my case when I first arrived here and didn’t yet have a job, I’d send my wife’s Nozei/Kazei Shomeisho and it worked fine.

Now, I also send along my own and it might just be a coincidence but I now only get 3-5 years instead of 1 years all the time. I might just be lucky with the monkey throwing the dart though.

Not sure about your last point, I always just sent last year’s but a quick call to the immigration office would clear things up a lot more than I could.

  2. If you’re both working, I would submit both just for good measure. If it’s your first spouse visa then you’re most likely to get a 1 year visa anyways, it wasn’t until my 3rd visa (second renewal) that I got a 3 year visa.

  3. I’m just going through this process myself! We sent both of our nozei shomeisho and shotoku shomeisho. Just ask for the most recent ones available when you get them from your town hall and they will be perfectly fine (“from Jan 1st” basically means a tax year). Immigration just wants to see that you’re not in arrears with your tax payments.

  4. Get both yours and your husband’s. He doesn’t even need to go with you. Quick and painless.

    >“Issued by the ward office, city hall, or town office of the municipality of residence as of January 1.”

Tax information and certificates are obtained from the city hall of the city in which you lived on January 1st. For example, if you lived in Chiyoda Ward in Tokyo on January 1st but moved to Okinawa later in the year, any tax information must be requested from Chiyoda Ward until January 1st of next year.

  5. Is there any reason for why you are moving from a work visa to a spouse visa? If you are not planning on quitting your job, changing jobs to a part time job, or if your current job has only gotten you 1 year work visas, why would you change to a spouse visa?

  6. Your husbands kazei/shoumei should be enough if he’s your guarantor. That was my experience anyway!
