Hello and Merry Christmas everyone. I’m currently an Foreign Intern living in Aichi. I’ve been here 2 years and my contract ends December of next year, I’ve made a few friends over here one of which is a senior Software engineer in a company. He’s the closest japanese friend i have and very kind. After i told him i wanted to come back to work in Japan he told me hehad a friend in Osaka who owns an IT company and told him he could put in a good word for me and also cause they need people who can speak English and japanese(granted I’m not very good at it). The qualifications weren’t a problem, just basic Python and java and they would teach us while we work. I just wanted to ask if Osaka was a safe place to work at? I’ve never been there and I’ve heard that if anything violent happens its mostly always in Osaka. And that there are alot of Yakuza still roaming around compared to other Prefectures in Japan. Just being careful before making any rash decisions! Thanks in advance!

I live in a small rural city where there’s been several violent issues, including a murder in the last few months, and it’s not anywhere near Osaka.
Shit happens everywhere, but for the most part it probably won’t happen to you, and Japan is overall very safe.
Osaka is a very safe place to live and work in. There are a couple of areas that are slightly “sketchier” than others (namely Nishinari and surrounding area), but honestly you should be good anywhere.
Northern part of Osaka is especially peaceful.
If you’ve been following the news, shit has been going down in Saitama, not Osaka!
The last few mass murders and stabbing sprees have been in Tokyo, not Osaka.
Osaka is safe and under-rated; I can even say life there is better than Tokyo.
Just bear in mind that the city is divided into 2 parts, north (take nagahoridori as separating line) and south.
Avoid south at all costs and stick to the north. Also, stay close to Kanjo line (Osaka’s Yamanote)
Why does Osaka seem to get the hate? While I don’t live there, I have been there a few times and have friends that are from there. Nowhere in Japan is very dangerous, so I would surely not be worried about general safety. Also, Osaka people tend to be very outgoing and humorous.
