If I’m not good at speaking Japanese, do I need to use polite language, or is it not important if they know I’m a foreigner? Does this affect the impression of the Japanese?
Yes you need to know basic politely language. Yes you will be forgiven for slips for being a foreigner, but yes you will be judged for it.
But if you already have enough Casual Japanese to have any form of Conversation, you can learn です·ます·でござる in like 5 minutes, so this whole question is a bit of a moot point is it not?
