Anyone with experience moving a vintage Airstream trailer (16ft, about 5m) or something similar to Japan from the US?

As soon as the visa application get approved, I will be bringing my father over to Japan. He has a vintage Airstream trailer he would like to ship, with or without his other belongings. Would they charge by weight or by size? In other words, could he fill it with boxes of books and equipment, etc. or would that complicate the shipment? I would like to hear any practical advice you may have about moving to Japan with bulky non-motorized items.

  1. No experience with a trailer but… I think the shipping company would have to inventory everything in it for customs. So complicate, yes but it’s their job.

  2. If it will fit in a standard shipping container that would probably be the most cost efficient. It will also be important to see if you would need to pay automobile import duties as these are substantial.

  3. Ok now I’m really curious- what are you planning to do with it in Japan? How will you tow it? Where will you store it? Are there campgrounds with RV hookups there?
