Movie Recomendation for lower intermediate & up: ケイコ 目を澄ませて

There’s a film out right now in Japan called ケイコ 目を澄ませて. I saw it last night in Sapporo and found it to be perfect for my level–challenging, but completely comprehensible.

It’s a sort of “slice of life” story about a deaf, female boxer. *Rocky* this is not.

A very quiet film, much of the story is expressed without spoken words. There’s short phrases written in subtitles, in text messages, and hand written notes. When they do speak, they often do so slowly, to match the speed of their sign langauge.

That said, while I can recommend the movie as something even lower-level learners can feel like they understand, I can also recommend the movie more broadly, as just a gorgeous film with an interesting story and fantastic performances.

  1. The first slam dunk was a movie I just saw today. It’s pretty difficult for me to understand sports specific terms as I have not yet learned many, but it was a great movie and the emotional plot was great in my opinion
