Can a person with a trainee visa get married to a resident?

So I have a friend of mine (Specialist in humanities 3 years visa) who has been dating her boyfriend for 4 years before coming to Japan and just a few months ago he came to Japan as well but as a trainee. They were planning to get married so they can stay here together but was told that trainees aren’t allowed to get married in Japan. His visa is ending soon so he has to go home. My friend seems really sad about it. I looked into it but didn’t find much info on the internet. Does anyone have any experience or know anybody in this situation and what did you do? Thank you for your kind replies.

  1. It looks like changing from a trainee visa to a spousal visa is generally prohibited. I found something that says there are exceptions, such as if pregnancy is involved, or if you get special permission, but the general advice seems to be going back to your home country, and then starting the process for a spousal visa from there.

  2. Getting married is not a problem, getting a spousal visa is a different story.

If they really want to get married it’s just paperwork, visa should not matter.

However it’s probably best after marriage to go back home and do a spousal visa application. I heard change of status is more than frowned upon.

  3. My (f) friend was on a student visa and bf was on humanities visa. They have the same nationality. They got married at their country’s embassy in Tokyo and female friend is now on dependent visa. Can’t they get married at their embassy and do the same thing?
