  1. In a case in which the town of Abu-cho, Yamaguchi Prefecture, accidentally transferred 46.3 million yen to one resident, Sho Taguchi, a defendant alleged to have illegally benefited by transferring the money to another account, knowing that the transfer was made by mistake, was tried at the Yamaguchi District Court on 27 January. In his defence, the prosecution stated: ‘It is clear that he gained unjustified profits without legitimate authority. The consequences of the damage are serious. The defendant’s crime was self-centred and there was no room for extenuating circumstances” and was sentenced to four years and six months in prison.

According to the indictment, Taguchi was charged with computer fraud for transferring 46.3 million yen transferred from the town to the account of an online casino payment agent in April this year, knowing that the transfer was made in error, and illegally benefiting from it.

Taguchi told police investigators, “I used the money for an online casino. I thought that if I did well, I would be able to increase my money,” he stated. So far, Abu town has recovered 46.3 million yen from the trader and others. Taguchi has also reached a settlement with the town by paying a settlement amount of around 3.47 million yen and apologising. Defence lawyer Daisuke Yamada has pleaded not guilty to the charge of computer fraud, claiming that he did not enter false information when he sent the money.

The trial is scheduled to conclude today and a verdict will be handed down in February next year.
