im hijacking this post! how do i tell people im ethnically chinese but not from china in japanese?
I suppose one emphasizes your nationality (中国人) and the other emphasizes your country of origin (中国出身). You could be of one nationality but with a different country of origin. Like say for example you could be a Canadian citizen who was born in China. Then you could say you’re a 中国出身のカナダ人.
I’m pretty sure that the first one means that you are Japanese, while the second one means that you are from Japan.
