So I’m going to Japan for 6 months in February. I’ve been working with Japanese immigration lawyer to get spouse visa. However, to submit coe I need my spouse in japan already (we live in the US) so I was planning to go to Japan together and then apply to COE there, wait for it and then apply to spouse visa. Another lawyer mentioned I might instead go for the status change but my first lawyer said I need a special reason for the the status change. What are your thoughts on the matter?

Changing status to spouse of a Japanese national from tourist is generally accepted. Plenty of folks coming through this sub report success with that.
