Context: Santa is having tea with someone. He isn’t wearing his famous red suit. He explains that he only wears it on Christmas eve. Then he says the above
I guess it might mean something like “Usually I wear something more normal” but I’m having trouble with whatever verb is しとります. Is it 湿る? I can’t exactly see how that fits here.
How are you supposed to tell the difference between とまる and とどまる?
Does とどまる usually use the alternate Kanji while とまる always uses 止?

What is がり in 変わりがり?
