We have a Japanese lady coming to live with us in Australia. What can we do to make her feel welcome?

She is 28yrs old and will be with us for a few months, we are a husband and wife and have a little 3yr old boy. She wants to experience Australian way of life, but it will be her first time in Australia and I don’t know much about her culture, are there certain foods, activities, or mannerisms we can be aware of or do for her to make her feel welcome?

  1. Well, the whole object seems to be to experience your way of life, so I wouldn’t go too out of my way beyond things you would do for any guest.

  2. I feel the biggest thing to make her feel welcomed would be to have a really clean house.

Not saying your house is dirty but because of cultural differences, the level of cleanliness expected could be different. For example, if you guys are the “wear shoes in house” type of household, maybe give her a huge heads up, at least she wont be hindered by it.

For food, I would say an average Japanese eat lesser than an average Australian. I suggest giving her half the size of your usual serving( if you guys eat a lot) and adjust from there( Japanese normally try to finish every last food on the plate, I think it would be nice to be considerate of her stomach).

Other than that, I think other than personal preferences, a normal Japanese should do okay in Australia.
