Moving to Japan as a UX / WebDev.

After 10 years of long distance relationship, my japanese gf and I have decided to marry.
The next step is of course to move to Tokyo and look for an apartment together.

I am 35 years old. I have a degree in UX design and Web Development, and I currently work for a company that owns a real estate managenent platform. My tasks are working on user interface, creating frontend functionalities, as well as some database / backend stuff.
I have also been in charge of creating design guides and UX strategies for the company. I currently have 1.5 year experience.

Plan A is to try and negoiate with my boss so that I can work remotely from Japan. However, if that does not work, I need to start looking for similar work in Japan.

Does anyone know where a fairly new UX / WebDev guy should look for work? I have tried LinkedIn, but I can only find Senior Positions.

  1. Japan-dev.com and Tokyodev.com are where I would start. Then I’d talk to recruiters like RGF and Robert Half and see if they can look for jobs on your behalf. Be sure to let them know you won’t need visa sponsorship.

How’s your Japanese? If you’re business-proficient, you’ll have much more luck with UX gigs. If not, you might need to lean on your programming abilities more.
