Question about PR / Tax and leaving Japan (temporarily 1year+)

Hi!
If somebody could provide a clue with my situation that would be very helpful…

I have a Permanent Residency visa but I must leave Japan for more than one year in order to take care of a very ill family member back to my country. ( Quit my job in the process )

– Does anyone left Japan for more than a year and came back after with no issues ? ( Within the period if the Residence Card)

– How about the Tax office / pension Office, I believe i need to notice them too ?

Thank you so much in advance for the replies…

  1. You should apply for the 5 year reentry permit. You should inform your municipality and file a moving out notice with them.

You will be responsible for residence tax (which is based on your previous year’s income). You will not be responsible for health and pension while not a resident.

You should set up someone as your legal (tax) representative here.

As long as you return before your card expires you will be fine. If there is a chance your card would expire, your can renew it early as long as you have a good reason (ie your will be out of the country).
