Just Moved into New Apartment – No Curtains, Weird Size Windows

I just moved into my new apartment and I love the place. Only problem is it did not come furnished with curtains and there are two huge 掃き出し windows. I’ve been freezing my first couple nights.

I have been trying to find some good curtains to install quickly. Stopped by Muji but none of the standard sizes (100cmx135cm, 100cmx178cm, 100cmx200cm) fit perfectly. 178cm is far too short, 200 is far too long. I need both 遮光 & レース curtains.

I understand I probably need to get them custom made, but it seems they will take over 2 weeks to prepare and deliver and I need to leave the country for a bit in a few weeks. Does anyone have any quick suggestions? Any stores that I can check for sizes outside of the norm, quick custom delivery or other short term fixes? I was not anticipating this being such a challenge but alas.

  1. You can get the long ones and before you leave the country drop them to a clothes alteration shop and ask them to shorten the curtains to your desired length. Then pick them up after you come back.

  2. I’ve ordered a lot of curtains from a site called “perfect space”. They have many that they ship out next day. I’ll drop a link in a reply to my own comment, I’m sure it will get auto-nuked but maybe a mod will approve it.

  3. Have you checked IKEA? Only place I was able to find them long enough for mine. Not sure how many lengths they sell, but they do tend to have ones that aren’t standard here.

  4. Get the 200 and cut and hem them up at the bottom. From your description, it seems maximum of 10cm adjustment. You could easily do that without cutting the blackout curtains and it will look fine and you can resize later if needed. Lace you mag need to cut and hem but it’s pretty straightforward. You can find videos on YouTube for some techniques to keep it neat.

Also make sure you’re measuring from the correct place on the curtain rail.

  5. So you want something that’s 190cm? The hooks on the curtains I got could be adjusted so that the the hooks are visible or is hidden behind the top part of the curtain so that essentially decreases the length by like 7cm ish ? Iirc I got the 200m and did it that way.

I’m sure some one out there can chip in and explain it better than I did lols.

  6. Before we had a child we had a “designer manshion” and I had the same problem. I think you have three options (actually credit to my wife b/c she did this): 1) go to Nittori and get them done custom, 2) buy them custom online, 3) buy something oversized if possible and live with it.

  7. Notori will happily take returns, we had to return some after we got the wrong size because my husband can’t measure to save his life. As another commenter said, the height of the rail and other things can impact what fits correctly so perhaps give Nitori a go with the 200cm and see how it is.

You can actually sit with a consultant, tell them the window/door measurements and get advice on the accurate size to get (width and height) of the actual curtain. They’re super helpful.

  8. Buy the 200cm long curtains, get a bunch of pins, then take the bottom of the curtain and lift it till the curtain is at the right length, then pin the bit you are holding to the curtain, do that the whole way across. I left my daughters curtains like that for half a year for when I was motivated to properly hem it.

  9. Nitori will hem pretty much any curtain they gave to your custom size. It might be free as well but I really can’t remember. Non-returnable, of course.

  10. Nitori and Ikea will both do custom lengths, but Nitori can make them extra long/wide, while Amazon mostly just cuts presets to length, so struggles with oversized ones
