Medical fee exemption at overseas

My father was recently hospitalized due to a life threatening disease. I am wondering whether I can claim for medical fee tax exemption since I am paying for the bill. I am a fully employed Shakaijin, and I send my father life expenses annually so he is Fuyo Kazoku.

  1. Just confirming, but your father is not a resident of Japan and isn’t insured under the Japanese health insurance, right?

  2. I believe you could get medical expense deduction since a) He is your fuyou kazoku, albeit living overseas, so you’re basically seen as living together (生計を同一にする), and b) You can claim medical deduction for relative within six degree (6親等内の血族) and your parent is definitely one.

Just keep in mind, this is quite an irregular case (with overseas fuyou kazoku and overseas medical statement evidence needed). I suggest you call or visit your local tax office and ask what documents and proof you need. I found the staff there very friendly and are willing to explain the policy politely. Good luck for you father.
