Help with confusing text.

I’ve been reading Baccano and came across this text: “町の高地。貴族達の邸宅が立ち並ぶ地域では、赤くなり始めた日の光が西側から差し込み、貴族達の屋敷を燃えるように照らし出している。”

In a loose translation it would be :”The city’s high ground. Where the aristocrat’s houses line up, the reddish first light of the day shines from the west and the aristocrat’s houses shines as if on fire”

My problem is that the Sun rises from the east so I’m afraid I’m making a mistake somewhere. This is the first line from a chapter, so I don’t think there is any context being lost. While there is supernatural in the series, I don’t think the Sun rising on the other side is s part of it.

  1. 赤くなり始めた日 “sun that has started to turn red”, so it’s probably referring to a sunset not sunrise

  2. I’m pretty sure it’s implying the sun is setting(as there is no mention of it being the first light).

赤くなり始めた日の光 -> the sun’s light which has started turning red

If you’re unfamiliar, 連用形・masu-verb-stem + 始める・始まる denotes something starting to happen or be done. Hope this helps!

  3. Oof. Sometimes you just need a fresh pair of eyes to show how stupid you’ve been. Thanks everyone for the answers.
