How strict is a “returning to Japan” date?

I’m home for the holidays and have come down with covid. When I left Japan, they had me tell them the date I planned on returning. My family is distraught because it’s the first time we’ve seen each other in three years, and now it’s looking like I’m going to be spending most of this vacation quarantining in my room.

My question is, if everything else lined up, I took a few more days off work, got my flight rescheduled, etc, would I be allowed to re-enter Japan a few days later than I had anticipated?

  1. I can’t imagine they’d give you any trouble if you’re a few days later than originally planned (if the person at passport control even made a note of the date). As long as it’s within the one year validity of your re-entry permit and before the expiration date of your zairyuu card you should be fine. I thought it was odd that they even ask (I flew out on the 22nd and was asked as well, unfortunately can’t remember whether they‘ve always done that).

  2. It literally doesn’t matter. They’re basically checking that you’re not going away for an inordinate amount of time or accidentally planning to miss a 1 year みなし再入国 period
