It is pretty random, but I was just messing around with the TV clicker last night, and around 8pm or so there was a cop show special on Tokyo Television. The opening act was a pair of patrol officers encountering a druggie in Hokkaido. The perp then attempted to drive away and it then turned into a long but medium/low speed chase through the suburbs of Hakodate, complete with 70 officers on foot, 4-5 patrol cars and even a helicopter or so.
…snd there I was thinking, “wait, did they really just turn this into a semi-prefectural wide manhunt for 2 packets of meth and a syringe needle sighting?”
I guess it’s a good thing that we live in a relatively peaceful country where drug offenses are taken seriously and there are resources available for this, but it’s a bit conflicting that these drastic measures and resources are spent on chasing one single shrimp.

That’s not giant manhunt by Japan standard tbh.
What was the alternative scenario that you envision should have happened?
Japanese police have nothing to do
It’s Japan. Drug users are more of a target than rapists. It’s all hands on deck of drugs are involved.
I think it’s more about resisting arrest and the attack on police authority than the actual offense. Could’ve been a red light.
And yet outside my local police station they have 8 grainy photos of murderers they can’t find posted up. Resources going to good use protecting the vulnerable people of Japan from people putting substances in their own bodies.
It’s their job and they’re not preoccupied with harder crimes. As long as they don’t do high speed chase. No issue. Legalization and decriminalization questions aside.
