Refund on reserved Shinkansen tickets?

Good morning friends.

About 30 minutes ago I learned that my mother in law isn’t feeling well and that my wife and I cannot visit them in Kobe this New Year’s.

I’ve already purchased the Shinkansen tickets to and from Shin Kobe (leaving Shinagawa on the night of the 31st and returning on the morning of the 2nd) which was about 6万円 and while I know it’s a slim chance, is it possible to get my money back?

I still have the receipts and all the tickets issued. Has anyone experienced this before?

It’ll suck if I can’t, but that’s life.

  1. You can refund anytime before the travel date. There is a small service fee like 500 yen per ticket or something.

  2. You can refund, but reserved seats limited express ticket refunded within 2 days of departure will have 30% fee. reserved seat limited express 3 days or more out is 340 yen. (Non-reserved seat is 220 yen btw) Anotherr 220yen fee for the basic fare part.

So for the 31st trip, you will get (6120*0.7)+(9160-220) = 13,530 yen back. For Jan 2nd trip, you will get (6120-340)+(9160-220)=15020 yen. You can only refund you to the departure time of the reserved seat ticket (for the express part) so better line up and get the refund today.
