Hi, I know the title might be asking a lot, but just curious if anybody has found anywhere to actually watch anime that has Japanese subtitles without some sort of vpn service. I tried setting up an account for an actual Japanese streaming website, but it required a Japanese phone number, so I wasn’t able to set up the account (required SMS verification). I’m actually trying to watch the anime legally, but without paying for a VPN (so paid steaming services are fine, so long as they don’t require a Japanese IP address). I am in the US.

Never tried it myself but checkout [this extension for crunchyroll](https://github.com/sheodox/jimaku-player). Might be what you are looking for.
I don’t use Netflix at all but I heard that the anime there has the subtitles. I also think there is a website called kitsunekko, where you can download the subtitle files for a good amount of anime selections. Might want to watch a youtube video tutorial, but it was something as simple as like dragging the subtitle files with the same folder as the video folder.
Just out of curiosity, is there a specific reason you are against VPNs? If you already have a Netflix etc. sub, the price of a VPN is probably going to be cheaper than another streaming service.
